Tsitsikamma community to benefit from wind turbine project - over 2 years ago
More than 40 wind turbines are going up at Wittekleibosch farm in Tsitsikamma, this will create thousands of jobs and electricity to several communities. The project belongs to the Mfengu and is being erected on tribal land returned to them under the restitution programme.
Green energy is the new frontier, and with electricity under pressure, the project is part of the community’s solution. Phase one is a 40-megawatt commercial wind farm, estimated at R1 billion. The turbines will generate more than 20 megawatts of electricity per hour. Currently, the farming community has no electricity and few jobs.
Chief Executive Officer at Watt Energy Mcebisi Msizi reckons that the community has benefited from getting its land back. The farm also has 700 cattle and a dairy industry is underway. Over 100 000 families will be shareholders in the project, making them the real drivers behind the initiative.
