Tisitsikamma Community Wind Farm Launch - over 2 years ago

The Board of Watt Energy (Pty) Ltd, The Trustees of ECCWEDA and the Ambassador of Denmark celebrates a huge progressive step in a world under uncertainty as energy problems increase.

November 30th 2009 marks a milestone achievement for the Eastern Cape Community when the Tsitsikamma Community Wind Farm will be launched. The Launch will take place at Wittekleibosch Site Office of the Tsitsikamma Development Trust. It will also serve to stamp the cooperation and understanding agreements with major players of the wind industry, including the turbine Champion, Vestas, DONG Energy of Denmark and the global wind energy leaders themselves, Denmark, represented by their Foreign Ministry.

The achievement, an African First, is hailed as a huge step towards the alleviation of economic and social problems in the Eastern Cape, for the Mfengu people, who have long been improverished and come from one of the poorest regions in the country.

The Mfengu people of Tsitsikamma have been an improverished people for decades, and to this day there is predominantly no electricity in Tsitsikamma. The Mfengu arrived in Tsitsikamma in 1837 (after the Mfecane that shapes the distribution, culture and heritage of the Bantu tribes), were forcibly removed from the land in 1977, and had to fight long and hard to get the land back, eventually succeeding through a court settlement in 1991.
