Green Your Transport - over 3 years ago
It might be a tad wearisome to consistently read ‘don’t own a car’ as one of the major ways in which you can green the planet - and, let’s face it, more than a little unrealistic when it comes to South Africa - but we can start thinking about how we use our car, the type of car we drive, and how to make use of other forms of transport as alternatives to getting around.
World's Largest Wind Farm Completed in Texas - over 3 years ago
Texas is now home to the world's largest wind farm. The 781.5 MW Roscoe wind complex has been completed and went live on the October 1st at 9:00 p.m. Built by E.ON Climate & Renewables, the $1 billion farm covers 100,000 acres of land across four counties in West Texas and will be able to power more than 230,000 homes. The company erected the 627 turbines and made deals with 300 different land owners in just two years time.E.ON is now moving on to even bigger things -- the London Array, which is set to be the largest offshore wind farm in the world with 630 MW being installed in just its first phase. Ever larger wind farm plans pop up around the world, especially in China.
Denmark shares its wind power secrets - over 3 years ago
Denmark is now home of the worlds largest offshore wind farm Horns Rev 2. The wind farm is a step on the road of letting wind power supply up to 50 percent of the Danish electricity consumption. The Danish experts now share their knowledge of integrating large amounts of wind power.
The Wind Spire - over 3 years ago
New Wind Turbine design good for both rural and urban environments, the Wind Spire. As nations move toward a greener future in the face of Global Warming due to the Greenhouse Effect, the rise of Ozone gases, the rise of sea levels due to increasing siltation and glacier defrostation, the Spire seems to be just the ideal energy generator

Send us your views and comments. You can make a contribution to ECCWEDA by sending us your views and comments, along with your contact details if you would want us to get back to you. Your comments are always worthy and will certainly contribute to the development of Wind Energy as a sustainable energy source, the emancipation of the Eastern Cape as a whole, and ultimately South Africa as a crucial component of the Global Community.
Illustration of a turbine - over 3 years ago
A wind turbine is a rotating machine which converts the wind's kinetic energy (energy generated from movement) into mechanical energy. The wind turbine converts the mechanical energy to electricity. Components of a wind turbine include: Anemometer, Blades, brake, Controller, Gear Box, Generator, Tower, Rotor, Shaft, Wind Vane
How a wind turbine works - over 3 years ago
Wind blows and sets the blades of a turbine in motion, thus generating power (power is derived from the kinetic energy)that can be converted into electricity. Turbines can be located on land (such as at the Tsitsikamma ECCWEDA farm). They can also be situated in the water, preferably close to the shoreline, where higher wind speeds and more steady wind conditions are available . Wind Speeds are also higher offshore, thus nations are currently striving to invest more in offshore wind plants.
